Robert Dunbar
In a previous letter we told you about the generous donation we had received from the family of Robert Dunbar. We would like to share some information about Robert with everyone.

Native
Robert (known to friends and family as Bertie), a native of Dunseverick, attended Dunseverick Primary and then Bushmills Grammar. Robert attained the highest mark in English A-Level in Northern Ireland, before studying the subject at Queen’s University, where he was a contemporary of Seamus Heaney.

Career
Robert went on to teach at Coleraine Tech and Rainey Endowed School and was awarded an MA in English and Education at Ulster University. Robert continued his career lecturing at the Church of Ireland College of Education, Trinity College and St Patrick’s College in Dublin.

Passion
Oliver Jeffers, an award winning writer and illustrator from Belfast said of Robert, “I have yet to meet an individual, anywhere in the world, who cared as much about books as he did. He leaves behind him a hole in children’s literature in Ireland. We should not attempt to fill this hole, because there will never be another Robert Dunbar. Rather let’s remember what he gave us, and tell stories about the man who taught so many of us to love them.”

Derek Landy, author of Skulduggery Pleasant series said of Robert, “He had a philosophy on reviewing in books – if he didn’t love it, he

wouldn’t review it.. There was far too much negativity in the world to spread any of his own. He was quite simply, the friendliest man.

Remembering
Robert passed away in July 2016 and is survived by his wife Carole, children Dominic and Grainne, and by his grandchildren Jack, Matthew, Edie and Astrid. His family asked that in memory of him people may wish to donate a book to a local school library. “When you give a child the present of a book, you give them a present they can open again and again. Behind that smile and the beard there was a fierce champion for children’s books, and you couldn’t ask for someone better to fight that fight. He was an expert, he was a guiding light.”
